Valley Nags Stumble at Last Hurdle

Valley Nags Stumble at Last Hurdle

Valley RFC5 May - 19:38

As told by Chris ‘Brooksie’ Brooks of Valley, NOT Chris ‘Brookie’ Brooks of The Union!

A grey and moody Hong Kong skyline was the backdrop to Kings Park, with some light mist swirling around Victoria harbour the Peak and Lion’s Rock. This dear reader was the setting for the 3rd annual pot bellied pigs fat boy 10’s HK edition trophy. With Valley Nags defending their winning two year streak.

A quiet confidence wafted around the team, much like the harbour mist; wearing our 50th anniversary special black and yellow kit (thanks again Louis), as usual on paper we had a strong side, with plenty of subs and even a water boy/pony, a first for the side. However this strong and numerous team was, alas, only on paper. Twenty-three good bastards had signed up to defend out title and three minutes before kick off we had eleven willing and able (mostly) players. Which was a considerable improvement from last year when we only had four for the first kick off.

Lack on numbers however were not a problem, as grit and aged natural ability led to our first game being a convincing win over the flying kukri’s; the force was strong with the Nags. Thankfully as the day wore on the numbers of Nags slowly and steadily went up. It was fantastic to see the likes of Wesley (take the direct route) Feausi, Doug (twinkletoes) Fluker and Hogan (the smash) on the field and the team had gelled well without any of the training or practice that other teams seemed to advocate.

Even Gary ‘The Ox’ Oxley showed up to show support, a welcome face in the bustling crowds, offering encouragement mixed in with a healthy dose of laughing.

Sadly despite a valiant final effort The Nags failed to beat a stacked Pot Bellied Pigs team in the semi final and our path to third year glory abruptly halted, but four games seemed like enough for the day. Thankfully Club also didn’t make it past that round.

A few beers sunk afterwards, watching some excellent finals and a special tip of the cap to the women’s Dinosaurs, some money raised for charity and a good day out. Thanks to everyone for showing up and getting involved. There’s life yet in these old buggers!
