Mustangs 64 - 22 HK Scottish Nomads IIs

Valley Mustangs Vs HK Scottish Nomads IIs, Saturday 29th October, 2011
After the Kiwi’s beating the French in the final of the WRC it was a surprise to see a Frenchman turn up to the Tangs game wearing an All Blacks shirt (Laurent) but perhaps that was the first of many surprises in the game.
After a typical Tangs warm up which consisted of a general chat about how many beers players had had the previous evening (Fat’s outright winner of that waking up in a pool of his own spew) and players arriving with seconds to go until kick off (some later due to ‘work’ – Jonny H and ‘wrong pitch’ – Matty D) the whistle went and the Mighty Tangs rolled into action.
2 quick tries in the opening 5 minutes for the Tangs had a younger and arguably fitter HK Scottish team in disarray, feeling overly confident a quick ‘chat’ on the 10m line was seen as more important than watching the restart and the Scott’s ran over for an easy unopposed try.
The pack was a touch heavier and more experienced than the Scott’s and set pieces were a joy to watch, Fat’s in a haze of alcohol let the backs loose and Rico, Laurent and Timmy ran wild. Support could have arguably been a bit quicker to the breakdown or in more numbers than just Andrew Lawson but Tangs were well up at half time.
Juan Pablo Escobar the new Colombian, Spanish speaking scrum half was communicating well with the mostly English speaking pack and second language English speaking fly half. Rolling subs were appreciated in the heat, but the tries kept rolling in (mention to Riebs’ who scored a beauty and told me to mention this in the report and if I didn’t he’d hurt me).
The Nazi Valley-hating ref made the game ‘interesting’ for all concerned especially at the breakdown or actually when any Tang opened their mouth other than to breath. Matty D took things further and antagonized him by calling him and idiot (yellow card) and re-enforced his point after the game politely suggesting that he ‘go to scrum school mate, and you’re still an idiot’.
Final score
Valley Tangs – somewhere in the region of 60 vs HK Scottish 20ish.
