2011/12 Season
The new season is fast approaching, and pre-season training will be commencing shortly to shake off some of the summer rustiness. It is expected that sessions will start early in August over the weekends, culminating with trials at the end of August, and hopefully some pre-season friendlies to get up to match speed.
Existing members should keep an eye out for newsletters detailing times and locations of training sessions. If you're new to Valley, and haven't already registered as a Valley member please do so, remembering to subscribe to the Mens Hockey Newsletter.
End of Season
The 2010/11 winter league season has finished for the Valley hockey section. The highlight had to be Carnage being crowned Division Two champions. Other honourable mentions for Bedlam finishing third in Division One, and Extreme finishing forth in Division Four. A tough season for Damage who couldn't quite pull off a Houdini act and have been relegated - expect a strong fightback next season. A very mixed season for Anger who had a Holland Cup semi-final, and finished as runners-up in the Guru Nanak tournament.
The season may be over, but the partying continues, starting with the world renowned 'Valley Hockey Country of Origin' tournament taking place on the hallowed plastic of Happy Valley on Saturday 11th June.
The following week has the annual 'Valley Hockey End of Season Dinner' this year being hosted at the Hong Kong Jockey Club. If you haven't already booked your seat at what promises to be the party of the year, then you should get your reservations in as soon as possible. It's going to be a raucous and glittering evening with the usual awards handed out, and no doubt an opportunity to hear once again, that Carnage are champions. Get in touch with your captain or Etch for ticketing details. The fun should kick off from 7:00pm on Saturday 18th June at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Moon Koon Restaruant.
Rounding off the winter season for the Valley club as a whole, the end of season bash to end end of season bashes this year is the Valley Lantau Beach Party. At Palm Beach on Lantau Island from 2:00pm through to 8:00pm we're going to find out what the netball, rugby, and hockey teams can do on a beach with 100 bottles of booze. Transport from Central has been arranged, the weather will hopefully be good, and it's a great way to sign off the 2010/11 season! Saturday 25th June to cap off the season at Palm Beach.
About Valley
Valley RFC branched out into Hockey in the early 1990's and has grown to be the second largest hockey club in Hong Kong, boasting over 200 players and six teams in both the Men's and Ladies' sections. The men quickly won three division titles and a knockout tournament, but these have proved harder to come by since then, with just one trophy won this century. Meanwhile the Ladies' have bagged four division titles this century.
Our teams operate across all levels of the sport within Hong Kong, from the top echelons of the Premier League which features past, present and future international players of many nations, to the delights of early morning games in Division Five, in which we usually field several players arriving directly by taxi from Wan Chai! All the teams mix well together and many matches are well attended, especially the derbies against our hated rivals from Sports Road, in addition to the numerous social activities along the way. The club also organises overseas tours to places such as Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok and Jakarta, with other destinations further afield under regular discussion.
In 2007/8, Valley's Men's section saw unprecedented success with all six teams finishing in the top half of their divisions, while both the Men's and Ladies had one side achieve promotion. The A's, thanks to a healthy influx of overseas talent, reversed the trend of the last few years by achieving a 2nd place finish in the Premier League, the highest finish in club history, playing some exciting hockey along the way. We all hope this upwards trend continues for a long time to come.
