Another 3 points in the bag with what was a stroll in the park win against a disorganized and old rabble made up from HKU professors. Given that a few of us were two or three sheets to the wind before kickoff (don't you mean passback? Smithers.) thanks to the Australian rugby match and other antics, it was impressive stuff. Though not flawless by any means and we can play better. It certainly appears we quite like scoring exactly 4 goals!
In good news for everyone, we now have a keeper, with Doug, under pressure after Strike’s excellent performance the week before, performing excellently to tidy up my mess on quite a few occasions and earning his clean sheet. He will be hoping the next time we meet that his Kiwi’s will be World Champions. Various other members of the squad will be going a different way. Mitch put in another fine shift (apart from that attempted diving tomahawk), and he and Unco, who filled in as front sweeper and by the end of the match was making his return to centre forward less and less likely, will both be cheering on the Aussies along with various others. While Pierre will be cheering on the French all on his own. [Sidenote. The French contingent in HK seemed to all congregate for the match v England in the bar “Trafalgar” in Wan Chai. Does this strike anyone else as a strange choice? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Trafalgar] He made his first appearance of the year and played very well in the space on the left, hit the bar to earn the champagne moment of the day for his anguished cry as he did so, but made up for it with a calm finish for the 4th in the second half. It had already been 3-0 at half time thanks to 2 from Strike playing at the other end of the pitch and a deflection off stick and foot (unsporting moment) from Cam for the third. Combined yardage on those three goals appeared to be about 7. Tap in merchants. It only stayed 3-0 for a long period thanks to our entire team ignoring the left hand side of the pitch for the entire second half. (Greg, left handed wanking only for the next three weeks please) Dan had so much ball on the right it was incredible. We’ll have to put him on the left next time so he can see how the other half live. And it also remained 3-0 because our glorious captain managed the Dougal of the day with an air shot to our best chance of the second half.
Last but not least, my thanks to No Show for playing 20 yards deeper than me, their centre forward for missing it every time I left it when he was right behind me, Doug for the aforementioned clean sheet, Meltdown (with more marauding runs and inspired/lucky/successful dummies from right back than you will see in the A’s) for not mentioning how sh!t I was playing until we were in the cab on the way home, and Unco for working out how to play in defense so quickly. That clean sheet is all yours as it had absolutely nothing to do with me. Reminder to self – do not pass to the opposition from free hits.
Training in 30 minutes time. And possibly a jar afterwards. Otherwise see you later in the month. By the way, we are currently top of the league!
ps No sporting moment award given I don’t believe. In absence of a winner so far this week, I nominate Meltdown for managing to not retaliate to the almighty swinging hack one of their lot had at his knees.
